My take on AI using water
AI, hot topici’m actually losing my mind scrolling through these takes lately. every time i open an app it’s some "activist" yapping about how AI is drinking the earth dry and murdering the polar bolars or the comments are FILLED with people spaming "save the polar bears" on a compleatly unrelated post.
let’s actually use our brains for two seconds.
1. datacenters aren't new, you just found out about them everyone acting like AI just dropped out of the sky and started chugging water like crazy. bro, where do you think your stupid tiktoks have been stored for the last five years? where do you think netflix runs from? datacenters have ALWAYS used water for cooling. it’s the most efficient way to keep chips from literally melting. but suddenly because it’s "AI" and not "scrolling through memes," it’s a global emergency? thats just stupid
2. the "closed loop" reality the biggest lie people push is that this water is just... gone (specifically drinking water). it’s a **closed-loop system**. the water flows in, picks up the heat from the hardware, goes through a cooling tower or a heat exchanger to chill back down, and goes right back in. it’s not being injected into the sun.
and the heat? people acting like a datacenter in frankfurt is somehow raising the temp of the arctic circle. be serious for once the heat dissipation from these buildings is NOTHING compared to actual heavy industry, cargo ships, or just... the sun. the polar bolars are struggling because of actual systemic pollution, not because someone asked chatgpt to write a python script.
3. context matters (stop the bait) if you actually care about water usage, go look at how much it takes to maintain a single golf course in a desert or how much industrial farming wastes. but nobody wants to post about that because it doesn't get the "AI IS EVIL" clicks.
it’s honestly just trendy to hate on tech progress right now. the water usage is insignificant in the grand scheme of things, and most of it is recycled anyway. stop letting these headlines fry your mental. we’re building the future (okay maybe not, its a bubble but who knows after all), and it’s not gonna stop because people don't understand how a radiator works.
stay informed lads :P
